DiskTree is coming soon · Purchases and downloads are not open

A little guidance

Start with a folder.
Follow your curiosity.

Understand your storage before deciding what to move. You don’t need to start with your entire disk.

Coming soon: public downloads and purchases are not open. This guide describes the app and the free-scan, paid-cleanup offer. Release compatibility and installation details will accompany the customer download.

Install and take a first look

  1. When the release is available, choose Download Free. No purchase or signup is required to scan and explore. Check the release’s Mac architecture and supported macOS versions.
  2. Open the ZIP in Finder, then drag DiskTree into Applications. Launch DiskTree from Applications.
  3. Choose a familiar folder with ⌘ O, such as your own Downloads folder.
  4. Explore the map. A larger tile represents more of the selected measurement. Click for details; press Enter to open a folder.

If macOS refuses to open a download, stop and contact support@disktree.app. We will not ask you to remove quarantine or bypass Gatekeeper.

The customer Mac download is not available yet.

Free scanning and paid cleanup

Scanning, exploring, real file names and details, Finder reveal, marking and review are free, with no scan quotas or time limit. There is no fully unlocked timed trial. A US$14.99 one-time purchase unlocks in-app Move to Trash on two Macs used by the same purchaser, for personal and professional work.

The purchase key activates while you are online, without a DiskTree account. After activation, the purchased version works offline without recurring licence checks. Recovery and replacement-Mac transfer use the purchase email and stay within the two-Mac allowance. Those customer services are not open yet. Purchase and key help →

Update manually

Version 1.x updates are included. Download updates manually, read their compatibility notes and follow the release’s installation instructions. Your purchased v1.x does not expire; later paid major upgrades are optional. There is no automatic updater or Windows entitlement.

Give access where you need it

macOS can ask for access to Desktop, Documents or Downloads. Scanning works within the permissions the operating system grants. Unreadable entries are reported; a partial scan is not a complete inventory.

For additional protected locations, you can choose to grant DiskTree Full Disk Access in System Settings → Privacy & Security, then reopen it. This is optional and does not override cleanup guards. Unavailable volumes and I/O errors can also cause unreadable items; Full Disk Access is not a fix for every error.

Read storage figures in context

Size on disk is allocated space reported by the filesystem. Apparent size is a file’s logical length. Sparse or compressed files can make those differ. Files and Age offer other ways to explore the same tree.

Hardlinked file data is counted once within a scan. APFS clones can share blocks while appearing as separate full-size files. Time Machine snapshots are not ordinary folders in the scan, and Finder may include purgeable storage in its available-space figure.

Selected size, moved-item size and available-space change are different. Trash normally retains data. Other applications can change free space during an operation, so a before/after difference is not proof of space recovered by DiskTree.

You choose. Review comes next.

  1. Inspect an item and reveal it in Finder if you need context.
  2. Press Space or X to mark it. Marking changes only the selection.
  3. Open Review with C. Read the paths, sizes and any refusal reasons. A marked folder includes its contents.
  4. With cleanup activated, choose Move to Trash and confirm the reviewed selection. Free scanning includes review; the paid feature is the action that moves items. Cancelling confirmation changes nothing.

Eligible items use native macOS Trash. There is no permanent deletion, automatic Trash emptying or fallback-to-delete. Failed or unattempted items remain marked for inspection, and the app refreshes the scan after an operation.

Why an item may be refused

The app guards the filesystem root, scanned root, home directory itself, protected system trees, mount points and directories containing protected roots or mounts. Actions stay within the approved scan scope. Changed entries, ambiguous paths and redirected parents can also be refused.

A final symlink is treated as the link, not its destination. These checks do not freeze every descendant of a folder or make changing filesystem paths atomic. Back up important content before making changes.

Keep related and synced content in mind

Application bundles, libraries and backups can contain many related files. Moving synced content can propagate through its provider. A name or category does not establish that a file is disposable.

Restoring an item

Moved items remain in Trash until it is emptied. Finder’s Put Back action may not be offered for this native API; manual restoration may be needed. DiskTree has no in-app restore command. Do not empty Trash until you have checked what you moved.

Locations and scan limits

Choose a folder or mounted volume through the app. A normal scan stays on one volume and does not follow symlinks by default. Recognised cloud-only directories are skipped rather than opened. Provider behaviour varies; a skipped folder does not mean it uses no remote storage.

Read-only volumes and network shares may not offer native Trash. The customer release will list supported Mac requirements; do not assume every network filesystem, Intel Mac or macOS version is supported before checking those notes.
